Background

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre has been a co-operator of the Trumpeter Swan Re-introduction Program since 1988 and we continue to rely on your support. The numbers of swans in Ontario are still not at a self sustaining level, as there are approximately 550 Trumpeters, with less than 100 wild breeding pairs. Trumpeter Swans still face many challenges including lead poisoning, injury and loss of habitat. Migration routes need to be established to expand their range. It has become apparent that juvenile trumpeters contract lead poisoning at a greater incidence than adults – studies are necessary to explain this phenomenon.

These birds need to be monitored for tracking purposes, as well as to monitor their feeding and breeding behaviour. Radio tracking is the best way to do this but it is extremely expensive.

Wye Marsh has one salaried employee that coordinates the Trumpeter Swan program as one of their responsibilities. Minimal funding is available for the many operating expenses related to this program including: swan food, x-rays, blood tests, medicine, wages, utilities, maintenance of docks and the treatment centre, bedding, needles and other materials.

This raffle is just one of many ways to raise awareness for the Trumpeter Swan program. With fabulous prizes the Wye Marsh hopes this draw will bring you closer to the Trumpeter Swan program.

The Campaign Goal is to raise $ 100,000.00 by March 1, 2006.
