Research Funded through Metcalf Internship
The Wye Marsh was one of five recipients from across Canada to receive funding for an Internship from the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation. The Metcalf foundation is dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of people and organizations working together to help Canadians imagine and build a just, healthy and creative society. Supporting institutions such as the Wye Marsh through internship programs, new graduates gain valuable experience as they grow to become the environmental leaders of the future. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Wind Turbines
The day was a success and many attended our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our Two Wind Turbines on Friday, May 25th, 2007 READ MORE>>
Wye Marsh in its commitment to the environment has been successful in
obtaining approval from the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency for the
installation of two wind turbines. These systems will be the focal point for
education programs related to generation of sustainable energy.
The project is being undertaken through the partnership and support of the
Midland Power Utility Corporation, and the Ministry of Energy’s Community
Conservation Initiatives. Installation will begin April of this spring.
In addition to education programs for grades 5 and 10 curriculum, partially
funded by Shell Environmental Fund, additional programs designed for the
general public will be available. Further, workshops for those interested in
installing a wind generator will help to develop an understanding of the relevant
issues.
The Skystream 3.7 with a capacity of 1.8 kW, features advanced technology
designed for grid-tie net metering applications. Its silent operation and
design make it ideal for residential and small business applications. We
hope to tie this wind turbine into Wye Marsh’s grid.
Bergey Windpower's newest product the BWC XL.1 has a 1 kW capacity. It
is intended for off grid applications used in conjunction with a 24 VDC
battery-charging system. This second turbine will be used mainly for
educational purposes.
Stewardship Projects
Land stewardship means that landowners, organizations and individual
citizens, including volunteers, care for the land, air and water, upholding
a level of respect for the environment and its vital ecological systems.
Land stewardship is a collaborative effort by interested and active members
of a community, which fosters action that promotes protection, conservation
and wise use of our natural resources.
The Wye Marsh Stewardship Department staff and our dedicated volunteers
are actively working together, through a number of different projects
that aim to sustain the natural life support systems of the Wye Valley.
Project listings on our website aim to inform the public of land stewardship
projects that are currently being undertaken or have recently taken place
around the Wye Valley. Project listings also provide a means of welcoming
volunteers from the surrounding communities to become involved in various
ways.
