Glossy Buckthorn

As Invasive plants spread across Ontario, native species are choked out of their natural environment. Irreversible damage occurs to native habitat and pristine wetland environments changing the ecosystem for ever.

Invasive Species Work Plan

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is pleased to announce our successful bid for dollars in the battle against invasive species. Through a large scale team effort by Wye Marsh staff, a proposal was prepared and submitted to the Environment Canada Invasive Alien Species Partnership Plan (IASPP) to secure funds to help ensure Ontario's native species can flourish. $18,200 has been allotted from IASPP to the Wye Marsh Stewardship team directed towards prevention, detection, education, research and management of Invasive Plant Species.

Common Reed Grass (Phragmites australis) and Glossy Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) have become enormous threats to the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Wye Valley. These invasive alien plants have invaded the marsh and have begun to alter the hydrological cycle, drying up some sections of the wetland, choking out native species, and reducing nesting grounds for Species at Risk. They are now pushing to the margins of the Wye Valley and threatening to take over significant ecosystems.

Goals and Objectives:
•  To raise public awareness of invasive species and associated problems.
•  To encourage the public to become involved in management efforts.
•  To research and monitor the spread of invasion of target species.
•  To control and manage invasive alien species within the Wye Valley.

Projected Outcomes:
•  To provide a working model for invasive species initiatives and further studies to be used Canada wide.
•  To manage and control target invasive species within the Wye Marsh PWA.
•  Increase public awareness and knowledge level about invasive species.
•  Encourage private land owners to implement control methods on their property.
•  Promote native species gardening in Southern Georgian Bay.

Though these funds will greatly impact the Wye Valley through hands-on management, the scope of the plan reaches much further having an effect on all of Ontario by ensuring proper education, habitat stability and improving the biodiversity of native species.

The work plan includes:

  • Brochures, posters and resources
  • Interactive displays
  • Website information
  • Website/Hotline reporting system
  • Creation of a curriculum/invasive species based school program
  • Field course for industries and public workshops
  • Active management and research

Keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming workshop dates!
