Garfield Dunlop, MPP of Simcoe North
Petition to Lobby for Core Funding for Wye Marsh

Garfield Dunlop announces he will lead a petition to request core funding for Wye Marsh in Midland, Ontario.  He is very optimistic that 50,000 signatures will force the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to take notice of this critical need. Businesses and individuals are asked to contact Wye Marsh for information on how they can access the forms to add their signature of support.

Wye Marsh’s current focus is on generating immediate revenues to maintain the present status quo, leaving little time and finances for future growth.  Attendance numbers are increasing, the facilities usage is maxed out and the equipment and buildings are inefficient and expensive to maintain.

To accommodate further growth, core funding is essential.  This would allow for a concentrated effort on expanding educational programs and make it possible to initiate exciting new research projects.  Sustainable funding would take Wye Marsh to the next level in the future development of excellence in environmental education and awareness, initiatives so necessary for a future faced with climate change.

Garfield urges all residents of Ontario to participate.

Please read before downloading form:

* Petitioners must be residents of the Province of Ontario: it is acceptable for petitioners to be under the age of majority
* A petition must contain original signatures only, written directly on the face of the petition. Completed forms can be mailed directly to one of Garfield Dunlop's offices listed on the form itself or drop it by to Wye Marsh. Faxes and e-mails are not accepted.
* Each person petitioning the Legislative Assembly must print his or her name and address and sign his or her name under the text of the petition.

Wye Marsh would like to thank you for your assistance in collecting the 50,000 required signatures.

Delawana Inn Spa and Conference Resort Supports World Wetland Day
--Donates to the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

Honey Harbour, Ontario, Canada ………….January, 27, 2008. Ontario’s Delawana Inn is one of the largest resort destinations on Georgian Bay and for more than 111 years has relied on the crystal clear waters to sustain the resort business and guest satisfaction. In addition to the traditional water sports, Delawana attracts boaters, fishing tournaments and provides fun water based activities for families and children. Clean beaches that are safe for swimming and water sports are critical factors in bringing guests back year after year. Delawana has made a commitment to the World Wetlands Day by donating $5.00 from each reservation made during the month of February. These funds will help the Wye Marsh spread the word to better understand the role wetlands play in keeping Georgian Bay healthy.

“Fresh clear clean water is our lifeblood”, states Gary Don, Director of Recreation at Delawana.

Delawana has several fresh water beaches on-site and around Royal Island for swimming, water skiing, children’s play areas, canoeing & kayaking and personal watercraft & boat docking.

Don adds, “Our perception about the environment has changed for the better over the past 10 years. We take extra care in protecting our beaches and shorelines”.

Delawana also engages their guests with outdoor nature programs including water based environmental education about wetlands, flora & fauna and healthy eco-aquatic systems in the Georgian Bay area. Both children and adults can participate with the on-site naturalists from the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre has one of Georgian Bay’s most significant wetlands and will be holding educational seminars on World Wetlands Day February 2, 2008. Wetland Information to be discussed includes:

Water availability: If water is extracted more rapidly than it is naturally replenished, wetland ecosystems will, in extreme cases, collapse, with a complete loss of ecosystem services. The effect of such extreme cases is costly in terms of human health, erosion, and poor water quality for drinking and other purposes.

Wetland food: Adequate, good quality food is a prerequisite for healthy people, and wetlands are key contributors to the food supply of fresh water fish and the recreational tourism industry in the Georgian Bay area.

Clean water: Inland wetlands (rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes, etc.) perform a vital function in filtering and purifying freshwater, rendering it 'clean' for possible human consumption.

Delawana Inn is located on the South East shore of Georgian Bay in the 30,000 Islands Biosphere Reserve. Driving from Toronto is approximately 90 minutes via Highway 400 to Muskoka Road 5. Photos and getaway family package information can be found at www.delawana.com or by calling toll free at 800-627-3387.

Editor's/News Director's Notes: In 2008, Delawana will have been creating family memories for over 111 years and in 2007 again received The Best Summer Family Resort in Canada Award provided by City Parent Magazine. That marked the 3rd year in a row that Delawana has been rated number one.

Travel writers and editors working on travel related stories are invited to visit and experience the Delawana by calling Gary Don at 705-756-2424.
