A way of making a special contribution to the Wye Marsh
Wildlife Centre
What it is
The Wye Marsh Circle is a group of dedicated individuals who
make an annual donation of $1,000.00 to the Wye Marsh Wildlife
Centre. These are donations that are used to keep the Wye Marsh
going and are distributed at the discretion of the Executive
Director.
Who belongs
There are presently about 20 members from various backgrounds.
All of them are committed to helping the Wye Marsh succeed in
a difficult time. This is a positive way to help the Wye Marsh
for those who are financially able to do so.
What do I get
There are no fancy newsletters or lapel pins. But, we do offer
an understanding and satisfaction of knowing that your contribution
is helping to sustain the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre through
these difficult times for non-profit organizations. The circle
does meet twice each year, in the spring and fall. We sometimes
meet at a member's house with a guest speaker. Or we may have
an excursion on the marsh by canoe or even a trip behind the
scenes at the ROM.
Members give because of the Wye Marsh vision but these get togethers
are a means of getting to know each other and of getting to
know the Wye Marsh.
What is the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is a place for wildlife and
a place for people. It is a place for people to learn about
wildlife and wetlands. Wetlands are those wonderful nurseries
for wildlife that produce the greatest variety of animals and
plants in the world. From the great wetlands of the tropics
to Ontario's own at Wye Marsh, wetlands must be conserved. They
are like a natural classroom and are a learning experience for
all ages.
Wye Marsh was opened in 1969 and operated for about 15 years
until it was closed due to government cutbacks in 1984. A dedicated
group of people called the Friends of Wye Marsh took over the
operation and maintenance of the centre in1985 rather than see
it close. The "Friends" have been operating the Centre ever
since.
The "Friends" have continued a tradition of quality nature interpretation
programmes for the general public and for groups including school
children, scouts, guides and others.
Wye Marsh is a place to explore nature. There are trails, guided
walks, slide shows, an observation tower and the famous marsh
boardwalk.
We are also well known for the Trumpeter Swan a species which
was abundant in the Wye Valley in the 17th century but which
almost became extinct in the 1930's. The Wye Marsh is the focus
of the re-introduction programme for this threatened species
in Ontario.
There are lots of other conservation projects at the Wye Marsh.
Will you help by joining with colleagues and friends in the
Wye Marsh Circle? We know that you will be glad you did.
